Literacy
standards in primary schools have been falling for years, under the influence
of discredited "look and say" teaching schemes.
The logical phonic method, by which
children learn to build up words by pronouncing the sounds of the letters,
was at one time stigmatised as "traditional" (i.e. old-fashioned).
But people learned to read better in the old days, and so the phonic method
is back in fashion. However, the present generation of teachers are, on the
whole, not trained in its use!
In C-A-T=Cat, Mona McNee
explains how parents and teachers alike can learn the simple principles of
this method. She provides easy-to-follow exercises which show the correct way
to sound out the letters of each word, helping the child to build up words
and sentences for himself in a way that the child will enjoy learning and the
adult will enjoy teaching.
McNee's ‘sound' advice is sure to be a hit
with parents and teachers of children aged four and over, especially those of
dyslexic children for whom progressive teaching methods are often disastrous.
