Step 18, 19

Click
here to hear the sounds of jug.
Learn the letters j,
u. Sound the sounds, not the names,
For a U, say "U (short sound as
in GUN) goes under and up"
Have the pupil practice writing the letters j,
and u, first, using the dot to dot guide above, then on lined
paper.
Set out the alphabet card, and add j, and u,
making 19 letters.
u: Make new words: rug mug cup but puff dug up pup by
listening to their sounds.
Read and spell
these words.
J: Make new words: jet jot
jam Jack.
Read and spell
these words.
Get the pupil to sound the sounds of the new
words.
Show
that Jack has a different kind of j, a capital J,
and
that it has a line across the top instead of a dot, and stands on the line.
Explain that we
call
all the big letters capitals, and we use them at the beginning of names of
people
countries,
rivers, days, months, etc., and at the beginning of a sentence. Teach capital
letters
as they crop up, one at a time. They are all tall, with no tails, nothing below
the
line.

We
use "sentences" when we say something, like "We are
hungry", or "It is raining". Letters
make
words, words make sentences, and sentences make stories. If you have a sound
twice
(Jack),
you only say it once.
Sing the alphabet. Touch
each letter as you sing it.
