Step 24

Learn the letter s. It fits inside
a circle.

Click
here to hear the sound of s.
Learn the letter s.
The
top bend of the s should be, if anything, smaller tighter,
than the bottom bend. We can say that s is the shape of a snake, and it makes the
same sound. Do snakes hiss? l have never heard one!
Have
the pupil practice writing the letters w, and e, first, using the dot to
dot guide above, then on lined paper.
Make
new words, to read and spell: ask
sat set sun sum sip sad sag gas sick sock suck
Say
words in singular (one) and plural (more than one):
hat
hats peg pegs a dog six dogs
and encourage the pupil to HEAR that by putting an
s after
a word, we make the word that means more than one of whatever it is.
Also show how the s is
used in verbs, run/runs, hit/hits, dig/digs. Tom zips his zip up.
Explain
that we say: I run, you run, but he runs.
I dig you
dig he digs
Show
where and why we use S in these ways.
Sing the alphabet. Touch
each letter as you sing it. We still have to learn q and y.
Set out the alphabet card, and add s,
making 24 letters.
Get the pupil to sound the sounds of the new
words.
