Step 39: ch

Click here to hear the sounds of ch.

Read the words from the SH list. Remind that h is a blowy letter. With c, it says a sound like a sneeze. SH goes on longer, CH stops short.

Have the pupil (or whole class) repeat 3 times, "See‑aitch says ch". Show that the picture is of a chin, and have the pupil find the ch in that word. Go through the list of CH words, with the pupil reading them. Point out that such much rich just end in ch, but other words with a short vowel are spelt: t‑ch: patch fetch hitch Scotch hutch (See also Step 66)

Sing the alphabet.                      Play the previous games.

Write a large ch in a pale colour, joined, and have the learner go over it, to learn how to join.

Find the pictures for ch in Step 40(chips match)
